Increase Your Sensuality, Receptivity, and Intimacy with Rose Geranium, Anna Bazarnaya

We are getting closer to the end of a Winter season and entering Spring with its energy of cheerful awakening, rejuvenation, and love, of course. Meet an incredible plant ally for this time – a Rose Geranium. Its physical and energetic properties will keep your Qi-energy moving, shake up the lethargy, calm the anxiety, release emotions, encourage intimacy, and reconnect with the joy of life.

Rose Geranium is a bushy perennial shrub, growing to a height of one meter, with a hairy, serrated, heart-shaped leaves and dense umbels of pink flowers. The Pelargonium genus includes over 200 species, with only a small number of species cultivated for their essential oils. Pelargonium graveolens of South Africa, especially the Réunion Islands, produces one of the highest quality.

The aroma of Pelargonium graveolens is sweet and floral, fresh and green, slightly citrusy, and spicy. It resembles and often substitutes for the essential oil of rose. The alternative name is rose geranium or Burbon geranium. The leaves of the plant are incredibly aromatic and are parts that are steam distilled for essential oil.

Planet of Venus rules the geranium plant, its essential oil and aromatic water (hydrosol). It is associated with Water and Earth elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is considered moist and cool in energy. The essential oil clears heat and inflammation, relaxes the nerves and calms the feeling of anxiety. As a tonic of Qi-energy of the Spleen and pancreas, it alleviates lethargy, diarrhea, and lymphatic congestion, relaxes the mind, calms agitation, and eases frustration and irritability. As a tonic of the yin-energy, it is helpful for chronic and acute anxiety, mainly due to stress and overwork, infertility, and symptoms associated with menopause, psychologically providing a consolidating “centering” effect.

The exotic, floral, and slightly spicy aroma is reflected in its well-known aphrodisiac effect that related to its intrinsically sensual, liberating nature. Nourishing the feminine creativity (Yi) and the still, receptive aspect of the Will (Zhi), geranium oil is ideal for the workaholic perfectionist who has forgotten imagination, intuition, and sensory experience.

The healing properties of the geranium essential oil include analgesic, antibacterial, antidiabetic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, astringent, calmative, cicatrisant, hemostatic, hepatic stimulant, insect repellant, lymphatic decongestant, pancreatic stimulant, sexual tonic.

It is generally a non-toxic and non-irritant essential oil when purchased from a trusted supplier.

The essential oil and hydrosol (aromatic water) of geranium help us to reconnect us to our feeling of life – to our emotional sensitivity, relaxed spontaneity, and a healthy thirst for pleasure and enjoyment.

You can work with the essential oil by inhaling its aroma from the vial for 10-30 seconds, 2-3 times a day. Or use topically by diluting five drops in 20 ml/1 tbsp of carrier oil (apricot kernel, grapeseed or jojoba). Use as a massage oil, applying on the areas of muscle tension or over your 2nd (sacral) or 3-rd (solar plexus) chakras.

Rose Geranium Hydrosol (the water part that results after the steam distillation) has been called “the best friend of the skin” and may just become your all-time favorite! Suitable for all ages and any skin type, this hydrosol is merely brilliant at attracting needed moisture to dehydrated skin and holding it there.

It may be used as a makeup remover, to soothe overheated and irritated skin and to clean cuts and scrapes. This hydrosol feels cooling and tingly when applied to the skin but is easily tolerated by those with sensitive skin, including infants and elders. Rose Geranium Hydrosol makes a terrific aftershave that appeals to men and, either on its own or with other hydrosols, is a magnificent addition to every kind of aesthetic product and treatment for face and body. As a facial refresher, this hydrosol brings the effusiveness of a floral bouquet to brighten grey days.

The Rose Geranium flower essence releases emotions. As I mentioned earlier, it has an association with the Water element in TCM, which carries emotions as memories in the fluids of our body tissues. The deva or spiritual intelligence of this plant acts as a sort of energetic deep tissue masseuse, clearing emotional complexes that distort the body’s cells and tissues. Each element has its emotional associations, and this essence can work with them all.

The water element is the one that is said to carry ancestral imprints – it is the “water of life” from fairy tales, the flow of the orders of love and life Bert Hellinger spoke of in his family constellation work. The association with water is also the water meridians – kidney and bladder (Winter Season), and the sacral chakra. Through the sacral chakra, there is an association with reproduction, DNA, and inherited emotional patterns of energy.

Bring plant allies to your life and flow more gracefully through the seasons.
